Doctorpreneurs of Doctology is pleased this week to showcase an interview with Dr John MacLean.
John founded DocLink while still practicing as a Pathology Registrar in the public healthcare system with South Australia Health.
What organisation / startup did you found?
My business partner and co-founder, Martin Orliac and I, started DocLink.
What is its noble purpose?
We use artificial intelligence (AI) as an aid in clinical decision making. Initially, we are focusing on utilising machine learning to improve the diagnostic speed and accuracy of lung cancer. Long term, we intend to further expand our services into other aspects of diagnostic radiology as well as genetic analysis for drug discovery.
What age were you when you had your first paying job?
I was the ripe old age of 18!
What made you want to be a Doctor and what speciality did you choose?
Like many doctors, I like the combination of science and its direct application to help patients. As far as my specialty, I am a bit of a glutton for punishment, as I’ve worked in several areas.
I have extensive experience in surgical pathology, general practice, and radiology. I think the combination of clinical medicine and diagnostics has given me a good appreciation into the entire spectrum of the patient experience.
What made you want to be an Entrepreneur? When exactly did you decide?
Correct utilisation of technology will improve patient outcomes - there’s no question about that. I guess my interest in my patients combined with a general fascination of all things tech lead me down this path.
Are you still practicing as a Doctor now? If yes do you intend to stop if your organisation takes off?
I recently left the hospital system to spend more time focusing on our project, so yes, you can say I am all in!
Why do you think traditionally many Doctors struggle with entrepreneurship?
I cannot speak for all my colleagues, but I know that for myself, the idea of medicine has always been a fairly rigid career path. It was only when I allowed myself to think outside the box that other options came forward for me.
What would you do in the event of a Zombie Apocalypse?
This is my favourite question. I love zombies, especially when they are thrown into apocalyptic scenarios! I guess it’s a realisation that you will not live long in such an event, so why not enjoy it? Me, my family and close friends, our pets - all out on a boat, enjoying a few drinks and the sun. Let the currents take us where they may!
